Busy busy weekend for our amazing teammates!

We have four big events occurring simultaneously this Sunday, September 7th, 2014: Ironman Wisconsin, Nations Triathlon, Tour De Chocolate Town and New Albany Walking Classic.

Since this teammate will start earlier than everyone, and finish well after all of you have showered from your events – let’s kick it off with honored teammate Jason Pullins! If you haven’t heard yet, he will be competing in Ironman Wisconsin this weekend! For those of you who do not know what an Ironman race entails, it is a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and 26.2 mile run. Sounds fun, right?

Interested in following along in his journey on race day? Please visit the follow website: Ironman Wisconsin

Next – we would like to wish our teammates heading out to Washington, D.C. to compete in the Nation’s Triathlon the best of luck! From the Columbus area – first time TNT participant Ben Christy will be tackling his FIRST triathlon – Olympic distance no less. Alongside Ben – teammates Ashley Meuser, Peter Jones, Sue Breitenstein and Coach Nancy Knickerbocker will be representing the Ohio Chapter.

Let’s hear it for the cyclist teammates who are headed to Hershey, PA for the Tour De Chocolate Town Century Ride! It seems as though the cyclists have had some tough events in the last few season – Vegas (HOTTTTT), Michigan (Rain), and Sunday in June (MORE rain) ….. what’s it going to be this weekend? We are predicting the perfect balance of sunshine, winds at their backs and fun times!

Good luck to teammates Janine and Jeff Oman, John Zimdars, Kristen Wilcock, Michele Murphy, Ralph Oliveti, Tim Hamburger, Tim Musselman, Tina Hogue, Todd and Wendi Jenkins. They will be lead by Coach Larry Jenkins!

Last – but certainly not least – our amazing walking teammates will be taking on the New Albany Walking Classic event this weekend. It’s the very first ALL WALKING event TNT has been a part of, and we’re very excited to celebrate our walkers at this unique event. A HUGE GO TEAM goes out to teammates Melissa Margiotta, Heather Koch, Gina Combes, Teresa O’Bleness, Julie Parr, Jes Gwin, Rhonda Hillis, Windi Hurley and Rena Saroiberry! They will be joining by our rockstar coaching staff Jeff White, Jim Tucker and Megan Kennedy.

GOOD LUCK THIS WEEKEND to all of our amazing teammates who will be competing! You are making a HUGE difference in the lives of patients and their families with every stroke, pedal and step you take.

Please take lots of photos, and share within the team forum. We can’t wait to watch you cross the finish line. GO TEAM!

The roster for Fall Season 2014 is complete ……

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your continued dedication to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society! It’s with your help that we are able to truly make a difference in the lives of patients and their families.

In fact, check out some of amazing factoids that are a direct result from the dedication of our amazing volunteers:

  1. Nearly 40% of new cancer therapies approved by the FDA between 2000 and 2013 were first approved for blood cancer patients.
  2. LLS has helped advance laws in almost half of the states (of which includes the state of Ohio) to ensure coverage and payment parity for cancer medications, regardless of how or where administered.
  3. Since the early 1960s, five-year survival rates for many blood cancer patients have
    doubled, tripled or even quadrupled.
  4. In 1964, the five-year survival rate for children with the most commonly diagnosed leukemia was 3%. Today it’s approximately 90%.
  5. LLS is the leading source of free blood cancer information, education and patient support.

Fall Season Teammates: We have one goal: A world without blood cancers.

What’s your BIG goal?

When you signed up for Team in Training, you were asked to raise a certain amount pertaining to your event. However, we know that you can really push the bar and hit an even higher level of fundraising. In fact – we aren’t the only ones.

With the help of Subway, we’d like to challenge you to push your fundraising to the NEXT level. If you choose to accept the challenge, and succeed – you will be the brand new owner of this purple band.

TNTSubwayBracelet2TNTSubwayBracelet

What’s so special about this band? This band will identify your ROCKSTAR fundraising status to the Subway employees. subway1As a thank you for going above and beyond your fundraising commitment, you will be able to purchase a “Training Meal,” which includes a drink and a 6” sandwich, plus either chips or 2 cookies (well-earned) every time you go to Subway, for the rest of the year, for only $5!

*Ham, Veggie, Turkey, Meatball, or Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki

So …. what’s the challenge? We are challenging you to go ABOVE and beyound your fundraising goal by at least $250 by final funds due for your event. If you reach this goal sooner (like teammate Katie Moyer, John Zimdars, and Kim Daniel), we will give you your bracelet early! That way you can start enjoying the rewards, while you’re training.

If every teammate went above and beyound their goal by $250 – that’s nearly an additional $20,000 raised for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society! It’s amazing how big of a difference you can make, when you work as a TEAM to reach your goals!

ALSO – by the end of this week, everyone will be recommitted for the Fall Season. As a thank you, Subway is providing a delicious “picnic” at the end of this Saturday’s training run. There will be subs, cookies and maybe … just maybe some popsicles!

If you’ll be at training – we’d love for you to sign-up for a sub that you’d like to be waiting your arrival post workout here: Post Group Training Picnic

Hey Team,

What an amazing weekend – full of wonderful TEAM moments. First up – here’s a picture  from the Run/Walk teammates training at Glacier Ridge Metro Park.

Here is our by far photograph that Coach Jeff captured over the weekend:

Yes… that’s teammate Chris King pushing his two kids in a jogging stroller at training. That means we have TWO very strong teammates that are pushing kids, while completing their miles. Wow … makes pushing just oursevles seem just that much easier. Right?

Next up – we had 7 teammates complete the Challenge New Albany Triathlon. Of which included: Paul Curtin, Rhonda Hillis, Samantha Hemmelgarn, John Lowry, Brent Emmons, James Palmer, and Kelly Jackson.

A special shout out to an annoynomous teammate who did something above and beyond the call of duty. As the swim began, a fellow racer nearby started calling for help. Abandoning his own race, he calmly swam over to him, called for the lifeguard to come, and once his safety was secure, continued on his race which included being swallowed up by the oncoming waves of people. We are honored to call you our teammate, and have the upmost respect for you.

5507_10200940905878083_1907311116_nLastly, we are working very hard to put together fundraising opportunities for the team to help reach their goals. If you haven’t signed up already: there are several roadblocks and a road marshall opportunity listed on the Volunteer Opportunities section of this blog.

If you are interested in setting up your own fundraiser, and are unsure of where to start – please let us know. We are here to help you be successful in all aspects of the TNT program.

Speaking of fundraising – please keep in mind that recommitment for the Columbus Half/Full Marathon and Nike Women’s Half Marathon SF team! If you’re ready to commit today, please fill out the forms below. All forms are due back by NO LATER than August 8th, 2014 for both events.

Hey Team,

It doesn’t just take athletic ability to train with Team In Training; It takes passion.

Over the weekend, 750 runners and walkers in the Worthington community participated in memory of Thomas Worthington Baseball Coach Stephen Gussler and in honor of our Team Hero Drew George. It was inspiring to see so many people out to support these two individuals – as well as to help others through the bone marrow registry.

Hey Team,

We are so excited to have officially kicked off the season this past weekend! There was a wonderful turnout of runners, walkers, Imagecyclists and triathletes – alongside their dedicated coaches. While we may choose to participate differently, we are all a part of the Central Ohio Chapter TEAM that is working towards finding cures for blood cancer.

This season we will be honoring a young man named Drew George, who is a sophomore at Worthington Kilbourne High School. During the Kickoff on Saturday, we were able to meet and hear Drew’s mother Julie share his personal battle with Leukemia. Towards the end – she mentioned that there is a run this coming Saturday, June 21st, 2014 in Drew’s honor. If you’re interested in participating in the event instead of attending training, you will need to go to www.worthingtonstrong.com and register!

This event includes a 4+ Mile point-to-point run and walk that begins at Drew and his sister Tori’s Worthington Kilbourne High School, and ends at Stephen Gussler’s Thomas Worthington High School; as well as a 1 Mile Family Fun Run for all ages at Thomas Worthington High School.

Look for TNT staff at the finish line area – as we will be representing the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society on event day. GO TEAM!

Fundraising Opportunities:

We just received a phone call from the Glo-Run requesting 2 volunteers to assist on the packet pick-up on Thursday, June 19th from 10:00-7:30PM. They will be donating $108 to each volunteer that’s able to help out for the entire shift.

ImageIt’s that time again – Red, White and BOOM! We are in need of 10 volunteers to pour beer, wine and serve wine coolers at the VIP section at Red, White and BOOM!!  This event is fast paced and ALL of donations are raised through tips.  Last year $2,159 was raised. Money will be divided evenly amongst the 10 volunteers.  Volunteers HAVE to be able to arrive by 3:45p to help set up.  Plan on working until about 10 when the fireworks go off OR when the beer runs out, which ever is first. Volunteers are allowed to stay and watch the fireworks if they so choose.

Beware that because of this event, parking prices are higher then normal.  Last year to park in a nearby garage was $20.

*Teammates ONLY! No friends or family members may volunteer at this event.*

This is the week we begin our journey – a journey towards finding cures!

1398754_206901156157673_129127475_o

Hey Team,

This image is so fitting for the first weekend of training for many reasons. There are many of you who are signing up for your first event with TNT, your first half marathon/marathon/triathlon/century ride, your first fundraising endeavor. There are also many of you who are signing up for second/third/fourth event with TNT this season. All of you know that without you, we cannot reach the LLS vision of a world without blood cancers. We cannot assist patients with medical assistance, provide education materials or support them emotionally throughout and after treatment.

It’s because of people like you that we can say, LLS is making Someday, Today!

This season we will be honoring a young man named Drew George, who is a sophomore at Worthington Kilbourne High School and a three sport scholar athlete.  He was 15 years old and had just been experiencing fatigue for a couple months, so he went for a blood test to see if he might have mono.  He was referred to Nationwide Children’s Hospital on November 7, 2013 for another blood test.  The doctor put leukemia and lymphoma at the bottom of the list because he had no other symptoms.  The family got a call later that afternoon that Drew had leukemia and we were to be admitted to the hospital that night.  Drew was at home waiting to go to basketball practice, but instead his parents had to sit him down and tell him he had cancer.  Before they went to the hospital, Drew went to basketball practice to let his teammates know what he was facing and that he really needed their support to fight the battle of his life.  That was the beginning of his journey.

DrewwithfamilyatXmas

Update on where Drew is today from his mother Julie O’Donnell –

“Through all that Drew has been through: bone marrow biopsy’s, CT scans, MRI’s, ultra sounds, echocardiograms, ekg’s, MRV’s, blood and platelet transfusions, ICU, nausea, vomiting, mouth sores and much more, Drew NEVER said “WHY ME?”  He faced each round with determination to beat cancer and so far he has!  His bone marrow is NORMAL and he has 100% of his sister Tori’s cells, NO LEUKEMIA!  HE IS MY HERO!  He is stronger than all of us put together and he’s fighting the good fight.  The hardest part might be the healing process because he’s now at home but can’t do all the things he is used to doing.  Thank you for choosing Drew to be your team hero!  He is so thankful to everyone who has supported him and he is very excited to be able to be a part of a group who is raising money to find a cure for cancer!

Depending on Drew’s health – he, alongside his mother Julie, will be in attendance at the Season Kickoff this weekend to share with you more about his personal battle. While Drew’s sister Tori was a perfect match for Drew, many patients are not as lucky. This is a reminder of the importance of being on the national bone marrow registry. If you have not registered yet, please consider doing so. http://bethematch.org/Support-the-Cause/Donate-bone-marrow/Join-the-marrow-registry/

On behalf of patients and their families – we thank you for your dedication to the LLS mission. We look forward to supporting you both in fundraising and training throughout the next 4-5 months. If you ever have a question, please reach out to your TNT staff person Alysia Smith at (e) Alysia.Smith@lls.org or (p) 614.498.0409.

Fall Season Kickoff on June 14th, 2014!

Hey Team!

We are only two weeks away from kicking off the Fall season … WE CAN’T WAIT!

At the kickoff – we will be hearing from Team Hero Drew George and/or his mother Julie. Drew is a Worthington sophomore who was diagnosed late last year with acute Leukemia. He just came home recently from a receiving a bone marrow transplant provided by his sister, who is also a WKHS student. The season hasn’t even started yet

10408649_10152218159417620_7645043729125624856_n – and we’ve already heard from several teammates how in one form another, they’ve met Drew through coaching, heard about him through the community, know his family through work or word of mouth because of social media. This young man is truly impacting his community through his journey, and we feel very honored to support him and his family in our fight against blood cancers.

After our first mission moment of the season, we will breakout into Run/Walk, Cycle and Triathlon. From there – your coaches will introduce themselves, go over some morning announcements, and then follow with a short workout to kickoff the season. If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know!

On behalf of blood cancer patients and their families, thank you for being a part of Team in Training, and helping us reach our goal: a world without blood cancer. GO TEAM!
